Any project would have stages which PMI classify them as Process groups. In PMBOK guide, following are stated as process groups
- Initiation
- Planning
- Execution
- Monitoring & Control
- Closure
In Initiation process group, all activities related to starting a project like identification of project stake holders, identification of project objectives, appointment of project manager, etc., would take place
In Planning process group, all activities like collecting requirements, defining project scope, preparation of work breakdown structure, defining activity list, sequencing the activities, estimating resources and duration for the activity, defining project schedule, define project budgets, etc., would take place
In Execution process group, carrying out with the activities planned would happen
In monitoring and control process group, verification of scope, controlling scope in terms of change management, controlling cost, controlling schedule, managing project team, would take place.
In closure process group, all project documentation, final product would be delivered to client, and project learning would be shared to the organization process assets.
Each process group is linked with each knowledge areas of PMI and it lists the activities to perform for each combination of process group and knowledge area.
