I am finishing now a PhD in physics but would like to change from academia to project management and it was thinking of doing a Prince2 training. Is the qualification worthwhile?
thanks!
I passed Prince2 Practitioner at the end of last year and all I can say that it doesn’t really improve your chances of getting a decent PM job. It only really matters when you have experience of using it in the industry you have worked in previously.
If you have recently come out of a PhD then your academic qualifications will be worth a lot more than Prince2. That said, if you want to fund a move into PM and do Prince2 you have 2 choices; either spend £1200 or so on a week cramming course or spend £50 on books plus £300 on a 2 day exam prep course, which various training companies do.
If you choose to go for it on your own, no matter how smart you are, I strongly advise you to do the 2 day exam prep course at the least.
It’s like the driving test, you are learning how to pass the test, not learn how to drive.
Good luck though
Its is an industry standard certification so it is definitely worthwhile, however on its own it will not get you a project management roll. There is a lot more to managing a project than understanding a process.
