Project Innovation – Three questions to answer

I think project innovations should answer the basic three questions before it gets funded.

1. What problem this innovation is going to solve?

2. How much this innovation would cost to implement?

3. How it will simplify things for the users / customers / staff?

I think the innovators had little trouble in answering the first two questions than the final one ‘How this innovation will simplify things for users / customers / staff?’

I think we should take take simplicity for granted and should seek proof like a proof of concept or a pilot.

I have seen many innovation projects extremely difficult to use. I dont blame the innovators for this. I dont think they are stupid or lazy to think about this factor. I think it is because they are not trained to do that. It should be the responsiblity of organisation’s traning department who should train their employees to take out the complications and complexities of their innovations.

Also I think there is complete sense of non-accountability. Accountability means that someone meet the process owner or appropriate business team leaders and asked, “What does ‘simple’ mean and how do we measure it?”

Pick whatever measures of effectiveness you like — time, number of steps, rework, etc. — but doesn’t “simpler” deserve respect comparable to “better for customers” and “cheaper for the firm”? After all, those get measured.

So let me summarise: If you’re not making things simpler, the odds are you’re making things more difficult for customers / staff. That’s a bad place to be.
