Power Nap: Let your team sleep to get more productivity

power nap - productivity improvement

power nap - productivity improvement

I studied in our of scientic magazine that naps are a powerful source of productivity. Naps just not energise your physical state, but also improve perceptual skills, reaction time and alertness.

I experienced the power of naps myself during weekends. I was writing at home for continuous two hours. By the time I finished, I drained all my energy and could not even spend some good time with my kid. I ate lunch and then took a 45 minute nap on my sofa. When I awoke, I felt brisk otherwise have dragged myself through the afternoon, I was able to play with kid in our playgroup the most demanding sport ‘football’ and could able work on my project until 10 pm without feeling tired.

Even sciencific research shows that people who take 30 minute nap between the sessions, could able to produce the desired result.  .

I think that pilots are given a nap of just 30 minutes on long haul flights, they react to situation more attentive than the pilots without naps.

It is not rocket science: the more hours we work continuously, the greater the toll on our performance.

The best time for a nap is between 1 and 2 pm usually after lunch, when the body deserve a period of sleep after your morning work. The ideal length for a workplace nap is 30 minutes or less, which assures that you dont sleep whole of afternoon and awake with sleep inertia.

I think this concept is now catching up and great companies are leading the way. My friends in China also suggest that afternoon naps are very common in their organisations.

Leaders and managers should understand that employees productivity is not measured by number of hours they works instead it is the passion and energy they bring when they are at work.  It is a value for money organisations pay to their employees.

I think company’s  HR should take the initiative and encourage their people to take nap.

If that happens, you can

•Schedule a regular time for team’s nap — between 1 and 2 p.m. is ideal
•If your team works in a cubicle and let them have it in their work space. Offer them some pillows.
•Switch off your computer. Switch off your mobile. Take the receiver off your landline. Set the alarm without fail and go to nap.
•Close your eyes (obviously) but don’t try too hard to fall asleep. Instead, breathe in through your nose to a count of three, and out through your mouth to a count of six. Even if you don’t fall asleep, this way of breathing will insure you’ll get a rejuvenating rest
